Meeting at the Fence
A young man and woman meet at the fence at the edge of the forest in early 1900s rural Finland. Fences like this were used to mark property lines and manage livestock. For many rural families, the surrounding forests were essential for providing firewood, building materials, and other resources crucial for survival. Daily life during this time was largely shaped by the practical need to use the land efficiently.
In this period, the connection between families and their environment was not one of leisure but necessity. The proximity to forests and open land played a vital role in ensuring families had the materials they needed to survive the harsh winters and sustain their livelihoods
