Sallatunturi and Rohmoiva at Kuolajärvi
Sallatunturi, located in the northeastern part of Finland, is one of the defining features of the Salla region. Together with Rohmoiva, these fells showcase the breathtaking beauty of this remote wilderness. Before the changes to national borders after World War II, this entire area was part of Finland, with Kuolajärvi serving as a cultural and geographical landmark. Today, while Sallatunturi remains in Finland, Rohmoiva lies across the border in Russia, a reminder of the region's complex history.
The photo, taken in the 1890s, captures the rugged landscape of both Sallatunturi and Rohmoiva from a vantage point that highlights the harmony between these fells. This untamed land has long drawn adventurers and nature lovers alike, seeking the tranquility and solitude that these remote areas offer. Though the borders have shifted, the natural beauty of this region remains unchanged, with reindeer still roaming freely and hikers exploring its quiet trails.
