Billnäs Ironworks
Originally founded alongside the Svartå rapids in 1641 by Carl Billsten, the ironworks at Billnäs grew over the decades to include one of the first primary schools in Finland, a brewery, and greenhouses filled with exotic plants and foods, including oranges and grapes.
In the 19th century, new workshops were added including a cutlery mill, a sawmill and a carpentry workshop, where Billnäs Bruks Ab started manufacturing American style office furniture in 1909. Taken in 1880, the photo depicts many of the workshops, although the furniture making came later.
