Frenckell and Finlayson Mills in Tampere
The 19th century marked the transformation of Tampere into a significant industrial center, often referred to as the "Manchester of the North." The Tammerkoski rapids provided a reliable source of water power, attracting entrepreneurs like James Finlayson, who established a cotton mill in 1820. This was the beginning of Tampere's rapid industrial growth. By the mid-1800s, the city was home to numerous textile mills, paper factories, and metal workshops. The industrial sector not only fueled economic growth but also led to significant social changes, with an influx of workers from rural areas.
Captured in the photo is the industrial heart of Tampere. Satakunnansilta, the bridge, can be seen in the distance with the extensive Finlayson Mills complex visible behind it. The Frenckell factory, another key industrial site, stands on the left bank. Originally established as a paper mill, the Frenckell factory played a crucial role in the production of paper products, contributing significantly to Tampere's industrial landscape.
