Helsinki Fire Department Training
At the turn of the last century, Helsinki’s volunteer fire brigade (Helsingin VPK) played an important role in protecting the city from fires. Before the establishment of a professional fire department, these volunteers were responsible for responding to emergencies, conducting training exercises, and maintaining firefighting equipment. Their work was especially vital in a time when wooden buildings were common, and fire posed a significant threat to urban areas.
Dressed in their distinctive uniforms, members of the brigade participate in a training exercise, operating a hand-pumped fire engine. These drills ensured that firefighters were prepared for rapid response when needed. In the background, onlookers observe the demonstration.
