Winter Travel in Korkeasaari
In the late 19th century, winter travel in Finland often required adaptation to the snowy landscape. In Korkeasaari, sleighs were a practical mode of transport, allowing people to navigate the island even in deep snow. Horse-drawn sleighs were commonly used for both daily travel and recreational outings, providing a reliable way to move across frozen and snowy terrain.
Korkeasaari, now home to Helsinki Zoo, was a popular excursion destination even in winter. While the island is better known today for its wildlife, in the 1800s, it was a retreat from city life, offering scenic views and open spaces. The need for winter transport in such areas highlights how people adjusted to Finland’s long, snowy winters before modern infrastructure made travel more accessible.
