Olavinlinna
Initially a fortress, St. Olaf’s castle (Olavinlinna) was founded in 1475 by Erik Axelsson Tott, regent of Sweden from 1466-1467.
Located in the Savonia region, it was a border area fought over by the Swedes and the Novgorod Republic as they sought to expand their power and reach. The location of the fortress was deliberately placed on the Russian side of the border in order to lay claim to the land.
The keep was completed in 1485 and the walls were erected by 1495.
