Celebration at Ratula Manor
In late 19th century Finland, the social lives of the wealthy were often marked by elegant gatherings and elaborate celebrations. These events, hosted in grand estates and manor houses, served as opportunities for the affluent to socialize, network, and display their status. The gatherings were meticulously planned, with attention to detail in everything from decorations to attire, reflecting the wealth and cultural sophistication of the hosts and guests.
The photograph, taken between 1890 and 1900 at Ratula Manor in Artjärvi, showcases one such gathering. The wealthy attendees, dressed in their finest attire, are seated at tables adorned with tablecloths, flowers, and fine china. The setting reflects the elegance and grandeur typical of social events among the upper class during this period. These gatherings were not just about socializing but also played a role in maintaining and reinforcing the social hierarchy of the time.
