Badminton at Muolaa Parsonage
Leisure activities were an important aspect of life for the middle class in late 19th and early 20th century Finland. With a stable income and some spare time, middle-class families, including those of clergy members, often engaged in recreational activities that were both enjoyable and a break from daily routines. Lawn games such as badminton were popular pastimes, offering a way to relax and socialize in the gardens and yards of parsonages and similar residences.
The photograph, taken between 1890 and 1910 at the Muolaa parsonage yard, captures a moment of leisure where a group of well-dressed individuals are engaged in a game of badminton. The players, dressed in the fashionable attire of the time, reflect the leisurely and relaxed atmosphere that such games provided. These activities were not only a way to pass the time but also served as opportunities for social interaction and networking among the upper classes.
