Wilhelmina Almqvist
An ambrotype portrait of Wilhemina Almqvist, a young girl. I absolutely adore the colour and texture of this image. It takes my breath away!
Ambrotypes, a mid-19th-century photographic innovation, emerged as a more accessible alternative to daguerreotypes. While sharing characteristics like one-of-a-kind, direct-positive images, ambrotypes replaced the reflective silver surface with a dark backing, offering a hauntingly beautiful and cost-effective glimpse into the past. This shift marked a transition in early photography, with both techniques coexisting for a time before being surpassed by more advanced methods.
