J.V. Snellman
Johan Vilhelm Snellman, a Fennoman philosopher and Finnish statesman, played a crucial role in fostering Finnish nationalism during the 19th century. Alongside figures like Elias Lönnrot and J. L. Runeberg, he was a key 'awakener,' contributing significantly to the development of a distinct Finnish identity.
Snellman advocated for the adoption of the Finnish language, which was spoken by about 85% of the population. As the headmaster of a school in Kuopio, he published influential periodicals like Saima in Swedish. His writings emphasized the duty of the educated classes to embrace Finnish, envisioning it as a language suitable for academic pursuits, fine arts, statecraft, and nation-building. Snellman's enduring legacy lies in his pivotal role in shaping Finnish nationalism and promoting the linguistic and cultural identity of the Finnish people.
