Steamship Harbour on Aurajoki

Steamship Harbour on Aurajoki

In the late 1800s, the steamship harbour in Turku's Aurajoki (Aura River) played a central role in the bustling trade and transportation network of the region. This harbour connected Turku, one of Finland's oldest cities, to the rest of the world, facilitating the movement of goods and passengers. Steamships would dock along the riverbanks, bringing in items from distant lands and exporting Finnish products across Europe. The scene captured here offers a glimpse into daily life at the harbour, with people gathered along the pier, their attire reflecting the fashion of the time.

The architectural style of the buildings along the riverbank mirrors the practical yet elegant design popular in Finnish port cities during this era. Turku, with its rich history and strategic location, stood as a gateway between East and West, where commerce and culture intertwined.
