Copper Smelting in Karjalohja
Kärkelä's copper smelter (kuparihytti) in Karjalohja, Finland. Finland had abundant copper deposits but the country was primarily an agrarian society in the late 1800s and mining/smelting was a relatively small part of the overall economy. The copper industry was one of the few industrial sectors at that time.
Copper smelting in the late 1800s produced many jobs for locals but also had significant environmental consequences.
