Two Women in a Basket Over Imatrankoski
Two women cross the Imatra rapids (Imatrankoski) in a rattan basket.
The Imatra rapids have been a famous tourist attraction since the late 1700s after a visit by the Empress of Russia Catherine the Great in 1772. Emperor Nicholas I established the area as Finland’s first nature reserve, Kruununpuisto (Crown Park), in 1842.
The rapids are also one of the 27 national landscapes of Finland.
