Kokkola (Karleby in Swedish) is a city located on the western coast of Finland, in the region of Central Ostrobothnia. King Gustav II Adolf of Sweden granted the town its charter in 1620. The town grew rapidly due to its strategic location along the Gulf of Bothnia, which facilitated trade with other coastal towns and regions. Fishing, shipping, and trade in timber and tar were among the main economic activities that fueled Kokkola's growth.
