Boy at the Ruins of Lemböte Chapel
A young boys looks up at the ruins of the medieval stone church of Lemböte, in the Åland Islands. Built in the Middle Ages, the chapel gave shelter and refuge to sailors traveling between Sweden and Finland. Dedicated to St. Olav, it was situated in the sheltered sea inlet of Kapellviken (Chapel Bay).
Reinhold Hausen photographed the ruins in 1871 and restoration work by architect Allan Schulman began in the 1880s. Currently , the chapel is used for worship services and for concerts.
