The Ruins of Kastelholma Castle
As an extra to yesterday’s post, here is an image from inside the ruins of Kastelholma Castle in the Åland Islands, Finland. The castle played a significant role in the defense of Åland against various external threats over the centuries.
Kastelholma Castle featured a combination of medieval and Renaissance architectural elements. Its design includes a square-shaped main building with four corner towers, a drawbridge, and a surrounding moat. The castle was strategically positioned to control maritime traffic and protect the island.
Partial restorations on the castle ruins began in the 1930s and the site currently houses the Åland Museum.
