Reindeer Herders
Reindeer herders at their night camp along the Tenniö river (Tenniöjoki) in Sodankylä, Finland, north of the Arctic Circle. The men prepare food over an open fire, their canvas tent in the background, their furs and guns scattered about. We can’t be certain of the time of year but we can imagine it is summer, when the days are long and the sun never sets.
The life of reindeer herders in Northern Finland during the summer was deeply intertwined with the rhythms of nature and the needs of their semi-nomadic lifestyle. During this season, reindeer herders would often lead their herds to regions where the reindeer could graze on lichens, grasses, and other vegetation abundant in the Arctic summer.
