Finnish General Exhibition Statues
The staircase landing of the art gallery of the Finnish General Exhibition in 1876 offered a glimpse into Finland's cultural heritage through its collection of sculptures and busts. Visitors encountered notable figures like poet Franzén, composer Beethoven, and the heroic Kullervo from the Kalevala, sculpted by artist Sjöstrand.
The artworks reflected national themes, with pieces including ‘Ilmarinen at Sampo’s Forge’ and ‘Väinämöinen and Ilmarinen’ showcasing Finland's folklore. Notable among them was Walter Runeberg's marble masterpiece, "Psyche and Jupiter's eagle," which caught the attention of Emperor Nicholas II of Russia, who acquired it for the imperial court in St. Petersburg.
Walter Runeberg's skill was evident in his marble portraits, including one of poet Johan Runeberg (Walter’s father) and a dancing boy with a musical instrument. The landing also featured sculptures by Lenngren, Stenberg, Stigell, and Takase, with 44 statues in total.
