Finnish General Exhibition Staircase

Finnish General Exhibition Staircase

The grand staircase at the art gallery of the 1876 Finnish General Exhibition stood as a striking feature, its wide design full to bursting with palms and exotic plants, guiding visitors on a journey of artistic discovery on each new level.

The lower gallery displayed the works of students from various schools nationwide, including the drawings and sculptures of the pupils at the Polytechnic School of Helsinki as well as the creations of seminary and public schools across Finland. In the middle was a display of metal works, including intricate clocks and telegraph machines.

On the landing, busts of poet Franzén, composer Beethoven, and hero Kullervo stood tall among many other marble creations.

The upper gallery showcased art from 61 artists with 257 total pieces, including works that offered glimpses into rural life and the serene beauty of Finnish landscapes.
