Ships in the South Harbour
At Helsinki’s South Harbour, two vessels navigate the icy waters: the icebreaker Sampo and the lightship Äransgrund. Icebreakers like Sampo were crucial for maintaining maritime activity during Finland's freezing winters, clearing paths for ships to travel through thick ice. Lightships, such as Äransgrund, provided essential navigation aids, marking hazardous areas and guiding vessels safely to their destinations.
From the vantage point of Tähtitorninmäki (Observatory Hill), the scene highlights the challenges and ingenuity of winter maritime operations in Finland at the turn of the 20th century, showcasing the adaptability required to keep trade and transport running year-round.
