A View of Helsinki in Winter
In the 1890s, Helsinki was still a growing city with wooden houses and villas stretching across the southern districts. The windmill visible in the background stood in Kaivopuisto, one of Helsinki’s oldest parks, originally established in the early 1800s.
The area pictured—bordered by Vuorimiehenkatu, Muukalaiskatu, and Ullankatu—reflects the quieter residential parts of the city during winter. The walkways are wet and muddy, hinting that the snow might be melting and spring may be on the way.
These neighborhoods have since transformed, but traces of their past remain in the street names and layout. Helsinki’s expansion over the 20th century gradually replaced many of these modest buildings with stone houses and apartment blocks.
