Kastelholma Castle Ruins
Kastelholma Castle, located on the Åland Islands, is one of Finland’s most historically significant medieval fortresses. Founded in the late 14th century, Kastelholma played a central role in the power struggles of the Swedish nobility and the administration of the Åland Islands. The castle’s location made it a strategic point for controlling trade routes in the Baltic Sea, and it served as a residence for Swedish kings and nobility over the centuries.
Despite suffering damage and decline over the years, Kastelholma has undergone extensive restoration efforts, which have preserved its historical character while allowing visitors to explore its rich past. Today, the castle is a popular tourist destination, offering a glimpse into medieval life on the Åland Islands and the region’s complex history.
