A Tram on the North Esplanade
In the late 19th century, Helsinki's Pohjoinen Esplanadi (North Esplanade) was a hub of activity, with its cobblestone streets and elegant buildings forming the backdrop to the city’s growing public transport network. A tram, marked with the number 12, moves along the bustling street, reflecting the modernization of urban life in Finland’s capital.
The tram system, introduced in the late 1800s, made city travel more accessible, connecting Helsinki’s residents to markets, workplaces, and social hubs. Along the Esplanade, pedestrians stroll past shopfronts and iconic buildings, while a dog ventures into the frame, capturing the lively atmosphere of the era.
This street remains one of Helsinki's most iconic, now lined with cafés and luxury shops, but traces of its historical charm still endure.
