Signilskär Harbour in Åland
This photograph, taken by Reinhold Hausen at the turn of the century, captures the scene at the boat harbour of Signilskär, a small island in the Åland archipelago. It features traditional wooden sailboats moored along the rocky shore, with wooden buildings and a windmill in the background, reflecting the islanders' reliance on the sea for fishing, trade, and transportation.
After the 16th century, Signilskär was permanently populated until 1935, when the last residents left the island. Today, Signilskär is uninhabited, but remnants of its past remain. In addition to a chapel ruin, there are still three buildings, remains of an old windmill, and a shallow harbor built in 1846.
