Hanko Harbour in Winter
In the late 1800s, the harbour in Hanko, Finland maintained its crucial role in trade and transportation even during the harsh winter months. The photograph captures a serene yet industrious scene with a few ships, including sailing ships, cargo vessels, and steamships, moored along the narrow pier. Despite the ice covering the sea and the freezing temperatures, the harbour remained active, with men loading and unloading cargo amid stacks of sacks and timber.
Several sets of railroad tracks run along the pier, connecting the harbour to inland destinations and aiding in the movement of goods. Steam rises from the steamships and a nearby train, blending into the crisp winter air and adding to the tranquil yet industrious atmosphere.
