Barracks and Customs House in Helsinki
In the heart of Helsinki's Kamppi district once stood the formidable Turku barracks, a symbol of the Russian military's presence in 19th-century Finland. It was built between 1830 and 1833 on the site of what is now the iconic Lasipalatsi.
Positioned near the Espoo customs house, where the road to Turku began, the Turku barracks held strategic significance. In this photograph from 1862, captured from the starting point of Läntinen Viertotie (now Mannerheimintie), the barracks loom in the distance, while the foreground showcases the Hammarberg villa area and Espoo customs house (notice the toll gate). The Arkadia villa can also be seen in front of the barracks, functioning as a theatre from 1861 to 1908.
