Castle in Turku
Turku Castle (Turun linna), one of Finland's most iconic landmarks, dates back to the late 13th century. Initially constructed as a military fortress, the castle played a pivotal role in defending the region and solidifying Swedish influence during the medieval period. Over the centuries, it grew into a grand administrative centre and residence, adapting to Finland's changing political and cultural landscape.
This photograph captures the castle’s formidable stone structure, standing resiliently along the Aura River. By the 19th century, Turku Castle had transitioned from a centre of power to housing administrative offices and serving as a prison. Today, it is a well-preserved museum, offering visitors an in-depth look at Finland’s medieval and Renaissance history.
