Good Friday Dinner is Served to the Poor in 1868 During 'The Great Hunger Years'
An English foreman in Tampere provided Good Friday dinner for 100 poor people in 1868 after receiving 5 pounds sterling from a relative in England.
Known as ‘the Great Hunger Years’ or suuret nälkävuodet, the famine claimed 270,000 lives in three years (8.5% of the total population) between 1866-1868. It was the last major famine in Northern Europe.
