Harvesting Ice in Hämeenlinna
Men and boys harvesting ice in Hämeenlinna, Finland in 1890.
Ice harvesting was an important industry in Finland during the winter months when freezing temperatures allowed for the formation of thick ice on lakes and rivers. Ice was harvested for refrigeration, food preservation, and industrial use. The harvested ice was stored in insulated icehouses, which were designed to preserve the ice throughout the warmer months. Icehouses often had thick walls and sawdust insulation to slow down the melting process.
