A Public Event at the Statue of Henrik Gabriel Porthan

A Public Event at the Statue of Henrik Gabriel Porthan

An event is held at the statue of Henrik Gabriel Porthan in the old market square in Turku, Finland. A professor and rector at the Royal Academy of Turku, Porthan was sometimes known as the The Father of Finnish History.

The photograph, which ran in the Åbo Underrättelser magazine on 9 February 1924, was described by professor Svante Dahlström as "probably taken in the same year (1864) on H. G. Porthan's birthday on 9th November, when the Committee for the collection of funds towards the cost of the pillar met to honor the memory of Porthan by visiting the memorial pillar.”

The park where the statue currently resides is now called Porthan’s Park.
