Viipuri Castle and Harbour
Men at work in Viipuri (Vyborg) with the castle in the distance. In the late 1800’s, Viipuri was part of the Grand Duchy of Finland within the Russian Empire.
Viipuri’s location on the Gulf of Finland made its harbour strategically important for both trade and military purposes. It was a key port in the region and facilitated trade between the Russian Empire and other Baltic Sea countries, as well as more distant trading partners.
