Market Square in Viipuri
The round tower (pyöreä torni) stands proudly in Viipuri’s market square. Built between 1547-1550 by Gustav I of Sweden, the fortification was part of a medieval town wall. The round tower has also been used as a prison, a warehouse, a government building for the city magistrate, and currently as a restaurant.
Viipuri was a Finnish city until 1944 when it was ceded to the Soviet Union as part of the Moscow Armistice.
